The New England Patriots signed cornerback Jason Webster to an undisclosed contract and placed promising 2008 third round draft pick Shawn Crable on the reserve/injured list due to a shin injury. Crable will miss the remainder of the season.

Webster who is 31 years old has eight years of NFL experience having played for the 49ers, Falcons and Bills. He was signed by the Patriots in March of 2008 but was released in August. The 5 foot 9 inch corner has played in 87 career games with 74 starts. The diminutive corner does not shy away from contact having recorded 323 solo tackles and six forced fumbles along with 11 interceptions.

The New England Patriots have signed quarterback Matt Gutierrez to their practice squad and could activate him for Sunday's game at the New York Jets.  Gutierrez was released on the team's final roster cutdown for the regular season after spending all of last season with the Patriots as the third-string quarterback behind Tom Brady and Matt Cassel. He originally signed before last season as a rookie free agent out of Idaho State. Brady went on injured reserve after suffering a left knee injury midway through the first quarter of last Sunday's season opener and is out for the year. Cassel came in and helped the Patriots to a 17-10 win against the Kansas City Chiefs. Rookie Kevin O'Connell is the only other quarterback currently on the roster.
