Patriots - Articles & Opinions

I won't rant and rave about the historical nature of yesterday's "contest" as outlined below are the milestones the Patriots achieved.... what I will do is bring things more into perspective...

All morning I read articles and posts that read , "Brady is back!", "Brady plays his best game of the season" and "THIS is the history-making Brady that we all know".... But, let's just step back for a moment.

Brady did indeed have a great game yesterday... well, a great 1 half and 1 drive of a game... and being taken out after tossing his 6th TD pass most likely prohibited Tom from having the greatest game by a quarterback in NFL history !!! I agree with Coach Belichick's decision to not risk an injury ANOTHER  in a game that was decided after the opening drive.

The New England Patriots have signed linebacker Bruce Davis to their practice squad . All week the talk has been that Junior Seau would be returning to the team and it's a good bet that he will. Meanwhile Davis, a third round draft choice in 2008 of the Pittsburgh Steelers played in five games his rookie season. Second year linebacker Jerod Mayo did participate in practice but I'm sure the dynamic player will not return until coach Bill Belichick is certain his star player is in good health. We can expect to see Seau in uniform sooner than later.

brady_throwingOnce you reach the top, there is no where to go but down. That is the sentence that all non Patriots fans have been waiting for but despite all of their hate, they will have to wait. Most teams are trying to find out just who they really are about this time. The Atlanta Falcons are flying into Foxboro at 2-0 and are really on their way up the NFL's ladder of status with the young but cerebral second year quarterback, Matt Ryan already proving he is the real deal. Newly acquired all world tight end Tony Gonzalez will only aide the young signal caller in his ascent to the top tier of field generals. Can the Patriots be had this Sunday? That's an absolute possibility, however only a fool or a "hater" would write off a veteran laden squad who has been to the mountain top and yes has the league's best player at his position back in uniform. Tom Brady is the best quarterback in the NFL today and has managed to create envy and jealousy among fans whose team's has a lousy quarterback.

pat_patriotWe all know that the NFL is a copycat league and if the Falcons unleash their premier pass rusher John Abraham along with more clever blitz schemes as the Jets employed, teams will continue to bring it to Brady plain and simple. While this offensive line is usually reliable, they have shown a tendency to struggle against teams that showcase athletic, speedy edge rushers such as Abraham, Dwight Freeney of the Colts, and I still have nightmares of the feeding frenzy Justin Tuck and Micheal "Old Man" Strahan had on Brady in their last Super Bowl appearance.

We are all aware that Tom still has to get his feet under him and he will but until then we can expect to see a lot of this early on. Wes Welker was dearly missed in that loss to the Jets and the good news is that he did participate in some light drills at practice today. Brady said it himself in his post game interview last Sunday. "Everyone has to do their jobs". We know he can do his and now he needs some help because it was him who made everybody better or shall I say look better. He helped send three of his lineman to the Pro Bowl in 2007 not to say they didn't earn some praise because they did a great job, but they must pick up their blocking assignments on blitzes, since when does Brady get called for a delay of game. Why, because he knew the protection wasn't going to be there as the Jets were rattling his cage all afternoon.

brady_dropping_backTom Brady, fresh off of a 50 touchdown MVP season in 2007 made the Patriots and their high octane offense the pre-season favorites to reach Super Bowl 43. Despite losing to the Giants in Super Bowl 42 after an undefeated 16-0 campaign, football pundits everywhere had the Patriots penciled in as a virtual lock to reach the title game again but the unthinkable happened. Midway into the first quarter of the first game of the 2008 season, Tom "Terrific" suffered a season ending knee injury and it was thought that New England wouldn't even make the playoffs.
