Manny Update 3.0: Buster Olney and Peter Gammons are reporting on ESPNEWS that the Red Sox and Florida Marlins are engaged in serious conversations regarding a Manny Ramirez deal! Gammons added that if Florida and Boston complete the trade, the Sox might then swing LF Jeremy Hermida and 2 prospects obtained from the Marlins to the Pittsburgh Pirates for All-Star LF Jason Bay! Our MLB sources are telling us that there may be up to 3 other teams involved in current talks with Boston.
Manny Update 2.0: The Providence Journal's Sean McAdam, speaking on Boston sports radio station WEEI, today said he spoke with someone who thinks there's still a chance that Manny Ramirez will be traded, and McAdam said the person said he thought it could happen tonight. Additionally, McAdam said the Red Sox were focusing on one team in the talks. Fox Sports' Ken Rosenthal writes today that "the chances of the Red Sox trading Manny Ramirez remain slim, but executives from at least one rival club in touch with Boston are convinced that the Sox are intent on purging their left fielder." According to Rosenthal, the Red Sox and Marlins are talking and if a deal is worked out the Red Sox would pay nearly all of the approximately $7 million remaining on Ramirez's salary. The Marlins would include Josh Willingham or Jeremy Hermida, either of whom could replace Ramirez in left field, plus a prospect
Manny Watch Update: Late last night, Will Carroll of Baseball Prospectus had an interesting rumor: "One good source told me that he had heard that the Marlins were involved, willing to give up Jeremy Hermida and Boston-area product Jeff Allison, but I couldn't confirm this. I just don't see this deal getting done." Boston needs more than this (Hermida and a healthy and sober Jeff Allison is a start)!! Throw in Dan Uggla and Taylor Tankersley and Florida may have something cooking on the Manny Ramirez front!
Jon Heyman (SI.com) Reporting:
The Red Sox have been talking to the Phillies and two other teams about a possible trade for embattled superstar Manny Ramirez, people familiar with the talks told SI.com. The Phillies may now be the front-runner for Ramirez, who apparently has indicated a willingness to go to Philadelphia if the two teams can consummate a trade. Red Sox officials identified Philadelphia as a possible landing spot for Ramirez a few days ago, and the Phillies have shown interest. The other teams in the mix for Ramirez aren't known, but it is believed that the Dodgers and Marlins showed some level of interest in the past few days. The Dodgers' interest wouldn't be surprising in that their owner Frank McCourt has collected Red Sox since buying the team. Matt Kemp's name is believed to have come up in talks with the Dodgers.
It isn't yet known what players Boston seeks in a potential trade with the Phillies. However, left fielder Pat Burrell is having a similar year statistically (.277/.400/.585 with 26 HRs and 61 RBIs in 103 games for Burrell; .304/.400/.538 with 20 HRs and 68 RBIs in 98 games for Ramirez) and could be a logical fit. Like Ramirez, Burrell has a no-trade clause. In the past, Burrell has indicated a willingness to waive his no-trade provision only to go to Boston or the Yankees.
Hume's Pure Speculation: A part of me wants Theo Epstein to consummate the highly anticipated "Manny Move" with the LA Dodgers for one reason and one reason alone and here it is, I have a great deal of faith in Theo's Bosox boys club to spot, accumulate and nurture young talent and in this case the talent would be none other than LF Matty Kemp who Epstein has been an enormous fan of going back to Kemp's High School days. Outfielders Jacoby Ellsbury and Matthew Kemp would be worth the price of admission for years to come at the "Fens". Names to keep an eye on and ear out for on the rosters of LA, Philly and Florida are: (Kemp, James Loney, Andruw Jones, Juan Pierre, Jonathan Broxton, Chad Billingsley, Clayton Kershaw, Russell Martin) (Burrell, Jimmy Rollins, Chase Utley, Cole Hamels, Kyle Kendrick, Brad Lidge) (Jeremy Hermida, Jeff Allison, Dan Uggla, Josh Willingham, Taylor Tankersley, Josh Johnson, Scott Olsen, Chris Volstad).
