UPDATE: The Celtics’ offer reportedly has come up short of James Posey’s demands in both money and length. Though he doesn’t discuss these matters, Danny Ainge reportedly was ready to cut his losses even before free agency began. The idea of paying the full mid-level exception to Posey reportedly made the Celtics director of basketball operations squeamish. Ainge, instead might want to spend that money on a proven numbers guy like Clippers swingman Corey Maggette.
Boston Globe (Marc J. Spears) A day after talking with Celtics coach Doc Rivers, a longtime family friend, Clippers free agent forward Corey Maggette said he is seriously considering an offer to join the NBA champions.
Maggette said he is still in awe about being contacted by the Celtics and has been mulling over their contract offer as well as interest from several other teams. An NBA source said the Celtics offered Magette the full midlevel exception, expected to be worth $5.8 million. The Celtics have made offers to their own forward, James Posey, and Maggette, but it's doubtful they can accommodate both.
While there is no news regarding Posey, Maggette said he could be coming to Boston in the near future to visit with the Celtics. Free agents can't sign until Wednesday.
Maggette said Rivers, his fellow Chicago native, called Wednesday. "We shot the breeze," said Maggette. "He asked about my family. My mom went to the same high school [as Rivers]. My family has known his family for a long time. I'm very comfortable with him."
Even with Maggette's scoring ability, he would be expected to come off the bench with Boston behind All-Star wing players Paul Pierce and Ray Allen. Maggette said he would have no problems with a reserve role. "I don't mind," he said. "If you want to win, you have to make sacrifices. With their caliber of players, that's what you have to do. "Going to a championship team would be exciting to me. Going to a team that can win and has tradition is exciting."
Hume's Pure Speculation: After getting the overall feel of Celtics fans thoughts on the Maggette to Boston rumor I'm not sure if we all realise the impact of this possible Ainge Acquisition. The addition of Corey Maggette in a green uniform would give the Celtics Front Office yet another massive marketing campaign revolving around the "Boston 4-Play" (I'm Copyrighting this baby right now). Furthermore a "4-Play" of Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, Ray Allen and Corey Maggette would be virtually untouchable, un-guard-able and un-bleeping-believable to watch for another season of 100+ Boston Celtic games! I will now take the pleasure of being the first and possibly last to predict that with a healthy "B4P" our Boston Celtics would be the first team in NBA history to record a 75 win season!
If you factor in the possibility of Corey with Billy "Cloud" Walker, J.R. Giddens and Gabe Pruitt you now have added a sizable amount of both speed and athleticism that would along with Garnett, Pierce, Allen and Rondo give "Gang Green" quite possibly it's most athletic and exiting team to watch in the long storied history of the club. You add the best/cheapest available Center (Chris Andersen, Alonzo Mourning, David Harrison or Patrick O'Bryant?) and Point (Keyon Dooling, Jason Williams or Shaun Livingston?) to that mix and as the late-great Red Sox broadcaster Ned Martin used to say "MERCY!!...."
