The Boston Celtics were trailing by 24 points midway through the third quarter when Paul Pierce told
his teammates, "Don't Look At The Score". Well they listened and had to "Dig Deep" according to Pierce and pulled off one of the greatest comebacks in NBA Finals history winning 97-91 at the Staples Center in game four. They now lead the series 3-1 and are one win away from adding Banner # 17 to the rafters. No team has ever recovered from a 3-1 deficit in the finals, but Phil Jackson refuses to admit it's over but it sure is close. Pierce was exhausted at the end of the game, but he realized something in the third quarter. He had no fouls and he could be physical covering Kobe Bryant even if he had to sacrifice a few calls. He could afford to. He told this to coach Doc Rivers and the good Dr. went with him. This was a true defensive effort to stop L. A. who started the game off like gangbusters leading by as many as 21 in the 1st quarter.
Pierce had enough in the third after being down by 24. The whole team seemed to respond and in the meantime our bench was coming up big. Rajon Rondo had to exit due to injury but Eddie House and James Posey both played starter's minutes, about 25 apiece and contributed at some key moments. Would you believe the Celtics outscored L.A. 31-15 in the third quarter. An enormous rally was needed and Boston’s comeback included a 21-3 run over the final five minutes, fueled by two 3-pointers from House. P.J. Brown had a monster jam to end the third. Our bench came up huge in this win. The mark of a championship team.
House hit an 18 foot jumper with four minutes left that took the sail out of the "fakers". Right there a feeling something magical was happening and tenseness turned to raw emotion. I felt they could do it too. Didn't you, fellow Celtics fans? L.A. had lost their composure and Boston just finished strong. Ray Allen had two athletically amazing layups that kind of set the tone for Boston. "They were going to finish, It was huge,” Boston coach Doc Rivers said. “It was really supposed to be a middle pick-and-roll with Kevin and Ray, and Ray waved Kevin off because he liked the match up that he had already, so he didn’t want to bring another defender in to help. It was a great call by Ray. The layup was just tremendous.” Bryant, who except for a 36-point performance in Game 3 has been plain ordinary (0 Field Goals in 1st half!). He tried to rally the Lakers and got them within 89-87 with one of his patented twisting layups. He also showed his poor attitude waving off a call he truly fouled Pierce on. “They were determined not to let me beat them tonight,” he said. “I saw three, four bodies every time I touched the ball.” The Celtics will look to end this and win on Sunday which is Father's Day. I bet they can. If they don't I'd rather see them do it at home anyways. On Second thought, what a Father's Day gift it would be!Quote this article on your site
