Boston Herald (Karen Guregian) Coco Crisp Fights for What's Right
Last night, there was another dust-up between the clubs during the Sox’ 5-1 win when Coco Crisp [stats] took exception to how Rays shortstop Jason Bartlett stuck his knee down to block the bag during a sixth-inning stolen-base attempt. Crisp made those feelings known two innings later, when he went hard into second baseman Akinori Iwamura on another attempted steal.
Next thing you know, Rays manager Joe Maddon was on the mound shouting unpleasantries at Crisp in the Sox dugout. Crisp, never one to back down, started firing back from the top step. “He put his whole knee in front of the bag, and it’s not something you do as an infielder. You gonna hurt me, I’m going to come back and hurt you.”
“I told him, ‘Look at me. Don’t look down the street at Tito.’ That’s what I was saying,” Crisp said of his heated exchange with Maddon. “And everyone else started looking, so I got louder.
“I don’t know if he could hear what I was saying, but basically I was saying I did that on my own, don’t punish anyone else on the team. Don’t get Petey (Dustin Pedroia [stats]), don’t get (Julio) Lugo, don’t get AC (Alex Cora [stats]) (by) sliding hard at second base. Get me with a pitch. If you want to retaliate with somebody, I’m the man. That’s pretty much it.”
Crisp, who said his thumb was merely sprained, claimed he wasn’t trying to intentionally hurt anyone but simply sending a message. “I went in hard to send a message. If I wanted to injure him, I would have jump-kicked his (butt). But I didn’t do that. If Bartlett would have covered, might have been a little more dramatic.”
Rebel Yell: A short time ago I rose to my feet and gave Covelli Loyce Crisp a long overdue solo standing o. for the competitive fire he displayed following separate incidents around the second base bag during the battle for first between our Boston Red Sox and as my 4 year old daughter commonly refers to them and any other opposing team as, "The Bad Guys."
I hope I don't type and or speak alone in showing great appreciation for the way Coco has gone about his business every day during his stint in Beantown. Through the good times and the bad he always stands by Red Sox Nation by giving us the hustle, fire and highlight reel defensive plays that have become common place in the Red Sox Outfield since he joined the team (via the trade with the Indians 3 years ago), not to mention he quietly has regained the sweet stroke we all anticipated him bringing with him from Cleveland.
