The Boston Red Sox beat the Orioles 6-3 at Camden Yards to take their second game in as many
nights but the story of the evening was Manny Ramirez. Manny stroked a 410 foot shot which put the Sox up 5-3 and officially became the 24th member of the exclusive 500 home run club. “I’m happy, you know, about everything I accomplished in life,” Ramirez
said afterward. “Not everybody has the chance to go and get to 500. I’m just
proud to do it.”
The 500-home run club has only two dozen members, but Ramirez also joined an even smaller fraternity. He is only the seventh player in baseball history with 500 homers, 1,500 RBIs, 1,000 walks, 475 doubles and a .300 batting average. The others are Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, Mel Ott, Babe Ruth, Frank Thomas and Ted Williams. “It’s nice to be part of history,” Ramirez said.
Jacoby Ellsbury also put his special skill set on display by stealing three bases, scoring on a David Ortiz sacrifice fly and started the Sox winning rally by smashing a triple to lead off the seventh inning. "He's been a difference-maker," said manager Terry Francona. "I'd like to sit here and tell you that we're managing him, [and] we're telling him when [to run]. He's just a good player. His instincts on the bases are tremendous. He's confident. He should be. He's making good decisions. And he's changing the game when he gets on base." That is why we may not see Sox outfielder Coco Crisp in a Red Sox uniform much longer. Ellsbury at only 24 years old should be patrolling center field and flying around the base paths for years to come.
Jon Lester started the game but was touched up for three runs and seven hits including a home run to Brian Roberts. David Aardsma came on and pitched two scoreless innings to get the win while Hideki Okajima pitched one inning and Jonathan Papelbon worked the ninth for his 16th save of the season.
Ortiz had to leave the game in the middle of his at-bat in the top of the ninth inning with a strained left wrist. The Sox have been beset by injuries early and often and were just getting into June.
Bartolo Colon is slated to pitch on Sunday afternoon hoping to keep Boston on the right track.
