The Boston Celtics beat the Detroit Pistons On Friday evening 89-81 in game six of the eastern conference finals at the Palace of Auburn Hills in Detroit, MI. They are now going to meet the Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA Finals with the first two games in Boston beginning next Thursday.
Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett have finally reached the NBA Finals for the first time. The
entire team fought hard and faced all the critics and truly deserve to be there. This is the match up everyone wanted to see. The two best teams are going to play in what should be a rip roaring, action packed and dramatic series. They last met in the Finals 21 years ago in 1987 with the Lakers winning that series (Boston defeated the Lakers for a title in the 1984 Finals). This year will make the 11th time these two storied franchises battle for a championship.
To get there this years team had a rough start to the post season going into the series against the Pistons with no road wins and everyone doubting they would be able to sustain enough to make it past them. Boston kept playing and pressing on despite getting rough treatment from the press and the fans. They responded by taking two road games from a tough and experienced Detroit squad putting them away in grand fashion. Their second road win was the biggest however seeing it was for the eastern conference championship.
"It's kind of surreal, probably hasn't even hit me yet because we haven't slept in about four days, going on five days now. Going to the finals, I'm just hoping to get some sleep. We're emotionally drained,'' Garnett said. They can rest up now and get ready for L.A.
The Pistons blew a 10-point lead in the fourth quarter and lost in Game 6 of the conference finals for the third straight year. They were eliminated on their home court for the first time during a six-year run that included a trip to the conference finals each year and the 2004 title."This is really tough,'' said Chauncey Billups who scored a playoff-high 29 points. "We had it, and we didn't get over the hump.''
The Celtics hung with Detroit all game and didn't rest on their laurels just because they knew they could come home for a game 7.
Just when it seemed the Pistons might be in control with a 70-60 lead early in the fourth, the Celtics scored nine points in less than 2 minutes and went on a 19-4 run that put them ahead 79-74. The Celtics validated their bold move of adding Garnett and Allen to join Pierce. Garnett and Pierce played key roles in the decisive fourth quarter, outscoring Detroit 20-13. That's when they stiffened up the defense and put the fork in them. James Posey played some great defense in this quarter also.
Pierce scored 27 points, Ray Allen had 17 and Garnett added 16. Boston point guard Rajon Rondo scored 11 points and Kendrick Perkins added seven points and seven rebounds.
The Kobe Bryant led Lakers are a tough bunch but if anyone is up to the task of taking them down, it the team with the best record in basketball this year, THE BOSTON CELTICS!
