Christopher L. Gasper (Globe Staff):

You don't have to be a card-counting MIT math wizard to figure out how many receptions Patriots wide receivers Chad Jackson and Kelley Washington combined for last year. Simply by showing up for the second day of the team's passing camp yesterday and hauling in a few practice tosses from Tom Brady, the two topped their total from last season: zero . The two receivers are at different points in their careers, but have the same thing to prove - that they can be capable pass-catchers for the Patriots. Randy Moss, Wes Welker, and the underrated Jabar Gaffney arejac060374.jpg all back, but somebody is going to have to replace the 46 receptions for 697 yards and three touchdowns that Donté Stallworth took with him to Cleveland.

"Donté is gone, so there is a big spot open, like everybody is saying," said Jackson.

Physical ability isn't the question with either the 6-foot-1-inch, 215-pound Jackson or the 6-3, 215-pound Washington. It's whether they can master the finer points of the Patriots' record-setting passing attack.

Chad Jackson when he did play showed flashes of great potential with his combination of size and speed. He must be itching to get in their with Tom Brady and company. He must also know as we all do, with Brady as your QB and you don't succeed it is totally on you. If your open he will find you. With all of the tools Jackson possesses, and if he can find his form after the ACL injury, he can do it and become a beast.  Also with Brady tossing the rock at you and you don't perform well, you probably don't belong in the NFL.
