Mariners lefty Erik Bedard allowed just two hits in seven innings to help his team beat Boston 1-0 atmannys_swing_away.jpg cloudy and dreary Safeco Feild.  Yuniesky Betancourt hit a solo home run off of Tim Wakefield in the third inning and that was enough for the win as the Red Sox bats were silenced and limited to singles by Manny Ramirez and Mike Lowell. Manny's quest for 500 home runs will have to wait until the Sox travel to Baltimore where he has hit 10 career homers in 195 at-bats.

Wakefield pitched a gem himself aside from the home run to Betancourt. This is his first start since allowing eight runs in five innings at Oakland. He had a season-high eight strikeouts while allowing five hits and walked no one. Only four Mariners saw a three-ball count. That's pretty impressive for the knuckleballer and proves when he is on his pitches can be nasty.

The Red Sox lost for the 10th time in 12 games away from Fenway Park. They are now 1-5 on this dreadful west coast road trip. They could very well be road weary since they  have played 16 road games this month not to mention starting the season in Japan of all places.

They have an off day on Thursday and will thankfully start to head back east with a series starting Friday in Baltimore.  The Red Sox planned to send RHP Daisuke Matsuzaka to Boston for an MRI exam Friday on his right shoulder.

Kevin Youkilis felt he could have played but manager Terry Francona had Sean Casey start again so the youk-man could rest his sore right hand. He expects to be back in the lineup on Friday. You can't keep our "Iron Man" down for too long especially since he is enjoying his best season of his young career.

Josh Beckett will pitch and try to right the ship on Friday for Boston.  In the meantime help NESB cover the Sox in our Live Chat Room and or Community Forums.
