After being dropped on the seat of his pants by a straight heavy one from Hopkins ( 48-5-1 32 KO's ), Calzaghe ( 45-0 32 KO's ) found his rythym and brought the fight to Bernard all night. Calzaghe won a split decision in the 12 round event. He was the clear aggressor and by the end of the match, Calzaghe broke the record previously held by Roy Jones Jr. of the most punches ever landed on Hopkins . The Compubox count was 232. Hopkins looked as if he may stay in the fight for the first three rounds but then the wheels fell off and Calzaghe took command. Hopkins looking quite fatigued from the onslaught of Calzaghe's flurries, resorted to grasping and taking advantage of some questionable "low-blow" calls by taking all the time he needed to recover. Hopkins can fight on if he chooses to, but he was outclassed and out of his league against the speedy and younger Calzaghe. While it wasn't a total yawner it wasn't anything spectacular either. It was an older fighter trying to hold his own against the more youthful boxer while hoping for one good punch but it came to early and it wasn't enough to shake the Welshman. Hopkins learned one good lesson from this fight.......Never say never !
