Half way through the preseason, and the Cs are starting to round into shape, winning their last 3 games after dropping the opener in Hidalgo.  Here's a look at how they're progressing, keeping in mind one thing: it's only the preseason!

Rondo: only four games in, and already there's heavy static in blogland, wondering why Rondo isn't dropping triple doubles, still can't seem to shoot very well, and, well, isn't Rondo-ing people.  Truth be told, Rondo's been doing everything Doc wants, playing solid, non-gambling defense and focusing his energy more on getting the team in its sets and less on getting to the rim or practicing his jumper during the games.  As Doc points out in today's Globe,

“He really wants it,’’ Rivers said of Rondo. “We knew that before. But the difference this year is he is doing it all the right way. He’s leading, he’s not gambling on defense, he’s executing offensively."

So, there you have it, the transformation of Rondo continues, with most of the real work taking place under the hood.  So far, so good.  Oh, and for the non-believers, Rondo just Rondo'd the Nets on Tuesday, dropping an 18/9/13 line, while absolutely dominating the 4th quarter and almost single-handedly bringing the Cs back from a 14-point 3rd quarter deficit and leading them to the win.

The Cs kick off their 2009 preseason schedule against the Houston Rockets Wednesday night at 8:30 p.m. EST in Hidalgo, Texas, in the first of eight preseason contests before the season opener on October 28th against the Cleveland Cavaliers.  Even though this season is shaping up to be another championship caliber endeavor, the Cs still have some questions to answer.  Here are a few of the storylines to watch in the next 3 weeks.

Celtics - Articles & Opinions

  • bos_thumbDoc Rivers is sounding like a man preparing for personnel movement involving his squad.  His usual pre-trade deadline speak seems to differ slightly from what we have read from him in the past.  Speaking to Marc J. Spears, Doc goes through the relationship details when it revolves around making roster additions/subtractions with Danny Ainge.  The Celtics Coaching Doctor would not discuss specifics but at the same time let it be known that something was going on and a maneuver from "The Range" would not be at all surprising. We the fans know the Celtics and President Danny Ainge need to make moves here before the end of business on the 19th, Glenn Rivers knows it, Dan "The Trading Man" knows it and it may be inevitable that the team at the very least signs one or two free agents and if possible makes a minor deal or 2 which would properly shape the roster for defense of it's 2008 NBA Championship.  Here at NESB I received word before Christmas that Ainge was already fully entrenched in trade inquiries, considering the team's weaknesses and the fact that Danny has put in major work with various opposing GMs in recent months, my money is on a transaction going down.  This post in our Celtics Forum outlines the teams and players under consideration for future agreements...
  • Just following up on a fresh news and rumors subject I published on Sunday, more than one Phoenix official has contacted the Boston Celtics within the past week and it has been tipped off to me that one of those Suns Front Office members have conveyed a few points of our interest to Team President Danny Ainge.  Point 1, Grant Hill is off the table in the smaller scale trade talks I referred to in my Feb. 8th article.  Point 2, The Suns who originally passed up the opportunity to draft Rajon Rondo are now requesting him in a few trade scenarios when the talk turns to Amare Stoudemire and the Brazilian PG Leandro Barbosa.  The 3rd and final breaking point relayed to me was this, Phoenix Boss Steve Kerr will only consider offers for Amare that include the names Ray Allen and Rajon Rondo as deal centerpieces.  The wishful thinking trade check I floated out there last weekend of Kendrick Perkins, 2 Number Ones and a host of young talent for Stoudemire and Matty Barnes will not get it done.  On the other hand the proposal of mine in which Ray Allen, a 2011 #1 and J.R. Giddens go to the land of the Suns for Amare and Barnsie might have legs with green nylon on them.  The last resort option for Ainge if he values the ability of Stoudemire that greatly is to entice and induce Kerr and Phoenix Majority Owner Robert Sarver with a package consisting of "Rockin Rondo" and a mix of future draft selections, prospects and expiring contracts by the free agent summer of Two Thousand and Ten.  If and it is an enormous if, Danny will move Rondo in any move to Phoenix he will without a doubt demand "One of his guys" who is 6-3 Leandro Barbosa.  Until now Leandro has along with Grant Hill been off of Kerr and Sarver's trade block.  There is nothing of any proportion imminent in Boston/Phoenix dialogue, due to Boston's current salary and roster predicament a small dealing between the 2 would be more realistic at this point and time.

celtics11 points was all the Boston Celtics could muster in the fourth quarter of  last evening's game against the Houston Rockets. We all know that's just not going to get it done.We already know that the Rockets are a bona fide playoff contender with stars Yao Ming, Ron Artest, and to top it off, Tracy McGrady didn't even play.

The 2006 draft was indeed a crazy one. It involved three trades from the Celtics and the acquisition of two point guards. However, at the end of the day, Rajon Rondo would emerge as he left the Phoenix Suns scratching their heads.

2007 Draft

Round 2 Pick 32: Gabe Pruitt [PG - University of Southern California]

After trading the fifth overall draft pick to the then Seattle Supersonics, and now the Oklahoma City Thunder, for the services of all world shooter Ray Allen, the Celtics found themselves with two early second round picks. The trade for Allen also involved the parting of ways with Delonte West, Rondo's backup point guard for the previous season. At USC, Pruitt was more of a tweener who played the shooting guard position, however, he did show the ability to handle the ball and was quickly labeled to be a project type point guard in the NBA. In his junior season at USC, Pruitt averaged 12.5 points per game while shooting forty-one perfect from the floor. Like West, Pruitt was a good defender who needed some fine toning if he wanted to play point guard. After a year, Pruitt found himself with a brief stint in the National Basketball Development League where he put up a solid nineteen points a game with four dimes a contest as he played for the Utah Flash. Heading into the current season many thought that Pruitt would crack the rotation and become Rondo's backup, however, the re-signing of Eddie House quickly put an end to that talk. Thus far in the 2008-2009 season, Pruitt hasn't seen much of the court. The 23 years old is only averaging five minutes a game and he has only appeared in eleven games. Still, there will come a time where he will have the opportunity to see viable reps and look for Pruitt to take full advantage of that. Looking back to the 2007 draft, it wasn't a bad selection. He's only one year removed from college so it is hard to really grade this class. I will say, however, that he has the potential, like so many other Celtics draft picks that have come and gone.

Round 2 Pick 35: Glen Davis [PF - Louisiana State University]

Big Baby, as he is called, took the NCAA by storm along side with now Chicago Bulls power forward, Tyrus Thomas, back in 2006 as LSU reached the final four for the first time since 1986. Like Pruitt, Davis entered the draft after his junior year where he contributed with 17.7 points per game and ten rebounds. After declaring for the draft there were two lingering concerns that general managers had with Davis; one being his weight and the other his height. Two factors that a player would hate to be discussed, especially around draft time, where teams are looking for negatives with players. Standing at 6-9 (on a good day) Davis is considered somewhat undersized for the power forward position. Remember, the Celtics drafted another undersized power forward just a year earlier in California's Leon Powe, thus making me scratch my head on the initial selection of Davis. Anyhow, then you had his weight. Listed at 280 pounds, Davis was very close to the 300 mark early in his rookie season. Now, over a year, Davis looks to be around the 270 mark and he looks comfortable playing there. Vertically challenged, Davis has to use his size to box out opposing players for rebounds and second chance buckets, so it is imperative for him to not lose to much of his weight. Davis showed some flashes last season, but let's not fool our self, the ceiling for Davis is rather short. Seeing action in all 26 games this season, Big baby has struggled. Only averaging three points and three rebounds a game in seventeen minutes, it could be said that Davis has hit a little of a sophomore slump. Throw in a crying incident, yes, actual tears, a couple of weeks ago and Davis has been a disappointment this year. A big problem that I see when watching Davis is that Celtics head coach, Doc Rivers, has him playing at the center position with Powe at the four. Davis is not a center, it's simple. However, the Celtics have no one else behind Kendrick Perkins, due to the failed experiment with Patrick O'Bryant. Ditto for Dikembe Mutombo. We'll have to see how Davis performs when he back in his normal position, but until then, he has been a disappointment in my eyes.

Overall Grade: C-

What do you expect when you have two second round picks with only a year removed? This very well could be bumped to a 'B' over time, but we need time to see these guys develop. While the actual drafting of players was kind of dull on this day, it will forever be remembered as the day when the Celtics changed their face of the franchise. This was the draft when Danny Ainge made that odd trade for Ray Allen and it marked the day when we all asked; "What's Next?" Then, in came Kevin Garnett. I recall that working out pretty well, wouldn't you say?
